The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) provides all electricity to LUS, that is then relayed on to our customers. TVA regulates the power rates of LUS, and all TVA Distributors, which are also approved by the Board of Public Utilities. TVA rates vary depending on the time of year as well as the month-to-month rate fluctuating according to the TVA fuel cost adjustment.
Natural gas is a commodity traded openly on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). Various factors, including available supply, perceived demand, weather, pipeline issues, storage levels, international concerns as well as other factors play a role in the cost of natural gas.
LUS, like other natural gas providers, is limited to the accessible pipelines which deliver natural gas to our system. The US government’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulates the rates charged by these interstate pipelines.
LUS hedges its commodity costs in order to provide rate stability and to minimize the likelihood of customer rates increasing and decreasing daily with market prices.
LUS establishes water and sewer rates based off of multiple factors including the full costs of treating, storing, distribution of clean water, and the treating, cleaning, and discharge of wastewater. These costs, in addition to other operating and maintenance costs are used to determine the end rate our customers are charged.
